Isometric Visuals and Development
The isometric style is the most spatial and realistic type of illustration at IBM. Isometric style harnesses dimension to create captivating scenes of people and technology at work. After creating in-house isometric designs, I was selected to join a group of artist to create guides, builds, and branded depictions of visuals that encompassed IBM’s ideals.

The illustrations I had initially created were developed with the thought of depicting the engagement and the relationship of man and machine. To visualize AI at work, I thought to manipulate the IBM Watson color scheme and use it as a way to “illuminate” points in the art. For the idea of transparency in data, I used levels of opacity and layering to help create depth and openness to pieces.
Build
When I began building in the isometric style, I found the clearest method for creating elements was using the 3D effects in Illustrator. I would begin by creating a flat dimension graphic using simple elements and illustrations with squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles, then applying the filter. After acquiring the correct perspective, I moved to further finessing the objects with color and scale adjustments. IBM has taken this further by applying a grid format to better moderate the look and feel for the isometric style.
Usage
The isometric illustration style is used to communicating vibrant and technical ideas. The spatial perspective allows for interesting layouts of environments, objects, people and technology.
